MUMBAI: Refuting the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation officials’ claims of 35 potholes on city roads, the ruling Shiv Sena demanded an inquiry against them. Standing committee chairman and senior Sena leader Yashodhar Phanse has also asked for a list of roads that senior officials visited and the repairs undertaken on them to be submitted in the general body meeting, which will be held on Thursday.

Citizens and political parties have been complaining about BMC under-reporting the number of potholes on city roads. On Wednesday, corporators lashed at the administration at the third meeting in a row.

IA Kundan, additional municipal commissioner, said, out of the 4,621 pothole complaints registered, 4,586 had been attended to by the BMC. On this, Phanse said, “Between Mahim Church and Sena Bhavan itself, there are more than 35 potholes. The administration is misleading Mumbaiites and we demand an inquiry on it. We are not ready to accept the excuse of excessive rainfall for potholes anymore.”

BJP too demanded a visit by the standing committee to prove civic officials wrong. Manoj Kotak, BJP group leader said, “We just have to visit the A ward and count the potholes to refute the administration’s claims.”

Corporators also lashed out at the administration’s reply on the JJ Marg potholes. Last week, Rizwan Khan, 21, lost his life after allegedly falling into a crater there. The administration, however, said there are no potholes on JJ Marg as it is a “concrete road”. The also said BMC has no policy to provide a compensation to the victim’s family.
