Construction for new airport to begin soon
MUMBAI: In a major development for Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), contracts for land levelling of the marshy airport site were given on Monday.
It included levelling of 80-metre hill in the area. The airport will come up on 1,160 hectares.
City and Industrial Development Corporation (Cidco) appointed Supreme Infrastructure and Gayatri Projects for packages worth Rs398 crore and Rs700 crore, respectively.
The development means construction work can be started anytime.
“The contractors are expected to mobilise their machinery in a month. Subsequently, the construction work will start, which will continue during the monsoon,” said V Radha, joint managing director of Cidco.
Land-levelling is one of the four pre-development works, which are necessary to carry out before the construction of the airport.
Other pre- development works include diversion of a river and shifting of high tension power lines.
Cidco has entered in the advanced stage of the tendering process for the airport development.
Cidco officials expect the developer will be appointed by early next year.
