The police said they have not been able to record the statements of the injured and hence the sequence of events is not clear.

The incident took place around 5.20am. The deceased has been identified as Sayyad Ali Amar Ali Shaikh, a student. The four injured are Maujib Shaikh, 20, Hamid Qureshi, 18, Rahim Khan, 22, and Irshad Ansari, 20, all Kurla residents.

The police said the youth were travelling in a Toyota Corolla (MH 04 BN 222), which was found mangled at the Platina junction in BKC.

The youngsters were taken to Bhabha hospital, where Sayyad was declared dead on arrival. Hamid was moved to Fauzia hospital in Kurla.

The police said there were no eyewitnesses to the accident. “It is not clear who was driving the vehicle, if he had a valid licence and where the boys were coming from.

"Because they had handkerchiefs around their heads, we believe they were on their way back after visiting the Mahim dargah. However, any confirmation will be available only once the statements of the boys are recorded,” said an officer from BKC police.

Looking at the damage to the vehicle, and the nature of the injuries of the car’s occupants, it is suspected that the driver was driving the vehicle rashly and at a speed of over 80km/hr.

“As of now, we have registered a case against an unidentified person for rash driving, causing death due to negligence and causing hurt,” the officer said.
