Assets of Rajya Sabha MPs have multiplied in five years

MUMBAI: The assets of Praful Patel and Piyush Goyal, the candidates fielded by t he Nationalist Congress Party and Bharatiya Janata Party for the Rajya Sabha (RS) elections on June 11, have more than doubled after five years, according to the personal asset details declared by the candidates during filing of nominations.

Sitting MPs Patel and Goyal had declared assets worth Rs125.4 crore and Rs30.34 crore in 2009-10. Now, their assets are worth Rs252.08 crore and Rs95.37crore respectively.

Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut, who is also contesting the election, has assets worth Rs14.22 crore, a marked rise from Rs1.53 crore in April 2010.

Patel, who was a union minister in the UPA government, lost the Lok Sabha elections in 2014.

His assets were worth Rs125.4 crore when he fielded his nomination for the Lok Sabha in 2009 six years ago. The party fielded him in the RS by-election in April 2014, where he declared his assets as worth Rs217.7 crore.

A commerce graduate from Sydenham college, 59-year old Patel has no criminal cases pending against him. He has no liabilities as well.

Piyush Goyal, the 51-yearold union minister of state for power and coal, is being nominated to the RS by BJP from Maharashtra. Piyush’s net worth, including that of wife Seema and their two children has risen at about three-fold to Rs95.37 crore from Rs30.34 crore in 2010.
