The coast guard received a message at 4am local time from the vessel, which was on its way to Qatar from South Korea, regarding the medical condition of Narendra Sharma, who was suffering from acute abdominal pain, a coast guard press release said.

On receiving the information, the coast guard advised the master of the ship to close the vessel at 20 nautical miles off the Mumbai coast.

A helicopter was pressed into service, following which Sharma was evacuated at 7am, it said.

He was later admitted to Jaslok Hospital for further treatment and is reported to be stable, the release added.
