Police said Lovely Bose, originally from Indore, was found hanging from the ceiling fan of her room in Shramsadhna Bombay Trust hostel in Bandra (East).

Kherwadi police, after initial investigations, said Bose, earlier working at an advertising agency at Andheri, had quit her job on December 16. She then went to Indore to be with her brother, Yuvraj, who was admitted at a hospital there with complications from his addiction.

Police said Bose returned to her hostel on Monday morning and kept mostly to herself.

Her roommate, Priyanka, a third-year Commerce student, in her statement to the police, said Bose had looked depressed and had promised to speak with Priyanka in the evening.

Priyanka then went out to visit a relative, returning only late in the evening. When Bose did not open the door for a long while, Priyanka and two other women pushed it open and found Bose hanging from the fan with skipping rope.

Bose’s other brother, Hansray arrived in Mumbai on Tuesday to claim her body.

“Our initial investigations suggest Bose was depressed due to Yuvraj’s drug addiction,” said Shankar Kapse, police inspector at Kherwadi police station.

Police said Bose had completed her MBA from Pune, and had been living in the hostel since the last eight months.

They are also recording the statement of Rahul Khandelwal, Bose’s boyfriend, who had known since her student days in Pune.

“She kept to herself and hardly interacted with people,” said a hostel warden who did not want to be named, saying he is not authorised to speak to the media. “This is the first time an incident like this has happened in 30 years at our hostel.”
