The Mahim police have registered a case against unidentified persons for abandoning a three-month-old foetus, on Tuesday.
Two witnesses alerted the police control room at 1.30 am, claiming they saw someone throwing a suspicious-looking object from a red car. They could not remember the car number. “They did not see the person who threw the foetus,” said Police Sub-Inspector Sashikant Nimbalkar.
As the incident took place near a major traffic junction, the police expected that the crime may have been caught by the closed-circuit camera television (CCTV) installed at the junction. But no such CCTV footage was found.
“We have seen footage, but nothing of that sort came to our notice,” said Deputy Commissioner of police (Zone V) Milind Bharambe.
The police have sent the foetus to Bhabha hospital for post-mortem.
