A 42-year-old businessman was assaulted and robbed of Rs 5 lakh by two armed miscreants on Saturday night. No arrests have been made so far.
According to the Kalachowkie police, the incident occurred around 9 pm when Suresh Surana, a Kalachowkie-based businessman, was returning home from work.
He was carrying a bag containing Rs 4.98 lakh cash and around 30 cheques.
When Surana reached the ticket counter of Cotton Green station, one of the accused attacked him.
“One of the miscreants accosted and attacked Surana with a knife injuring his right hand. He then snatched the bag and fled,” said Vinay Kulkarni, police inspector of the Kalachowkie police station.
“The other accused was waiting on a bike outside the station. The duo then sped off,” added Kulkarni.
Both assailants were in their early twenties. Surana, a resident of Abhyudaya Nagar, is a distributor and supplies products of the Parle company to retail outlets in Mumbai. He was returning home from his office in Sandhurst Road.
“Within minutes, the accused committed the crime and fled,”said an officer.
The police have registered a case of robbery. “The accused are history sheeters and might have carried out similar robberies in the city. We are preparing sketches of the accused based on the descriptions by complainant,” the officer added.
“Surana carries cash from his office to work at least thrice in a week. It appears that the accused were acquainted with Surana and knew about his schedule. They must have kept a watch on him,” Kulkarni added.
