A man allegedly burnt his 30-year-old wife to death at Mankhurd on Tuesday, while the couple’s three children were present in the house.
The police said the accused, Abhaa Bagade, 35, was upset with his wife for not getting enough dowry because of which they had an argument.
The family members of the victim, Kavita Abha Bagade, alleged that her husband would often come home drunk and fight with her over petty issues and harass her for dowry.
The incident took place around 2.30pm on Tuesday afternoon at the Bagade residence at Ambedkar chawl in the Sattenagar area of Mankhurd.
Senior police inspector, Pascal D’Souza said, “Abha and with his mother and sister would taunt Kavita for not bringing enough dowry with her. On Tuesday, the duo had a fight. Things turned ugly when Abha began beating his wife. He then doused her with kerosene and set her ablaze.”
Kavita’s uncle, Shankar Rama Aaran said, “Bhagade locked her inside a room for several hours but he later brought her out of the house around 5 pm when he realized that she would because of the burn injuries. He then told the neighbours that Kavita was injured when the domestic stove at their house exploded when she was cooking in the kitchen.”
The neighbours contacted the police who then rushed Kavitha to the Rajawadi Hospital. Kavitha sustained almost 50% burns to her body.
She however succumbed to the burn injuries around 8:15 pm on Tuesday at the hospital during the treatment.
Kavitha is survived by two sons aged six and one-and-a half months old and a four-year-old daughter.
D’Souza said, “ We have arrested Abhaa Bagade under Section 498 (dowry harassment) and 302 (murder) of Indian Penal Code. We will be arresting mother-in-law Sudhamathi Janardhan Bhagade, 55, and sister-in-law Kamal Vaman Todare, 27, soon.”
