The 21-year-old woman had met the 27-year-old man at a club in Worli, where they both played kabbadi professionally, and fell in love. In the first week of May, following a fight, the girl filed a complaint of rape at the Shahu Nagar police station.

The man was arrested on May 14 and remanded in police custody initially. The man’s bail application was first rejected by the magistrate court as it did not have the power to grant him bail. The man then moved the sessions court for bail.

During the hearing, the girl filed an affidavit before the court stating that she was in love with the man and their relationship was consensual. Upon hearing this, the court came down heavily on the prosecution and the girl.

“Is this a joke? How can you file such a serious case in frustration and use the police machinery for your benefit. You cannot file a case whenever you want and withdraw it later,” judge Vrushali Joshi told the woman.
