Mumbai: Suspended traffic cop likely to be reinstated

Police sub-inspector Sachin Suryavanshi, attached to the Mumbai police traffic department, who has been put under suspension following a breach of privilege motion moved against him in the state legislature after he fined the driver of a legislator for speeding on the Bandra-Worli sea link on March 18, is likely to be reinstated in a couple of weeks.
Highly placed sources in the Mumbai police told Hindustan Times on Monday that the top brass of the force has decided to call back the suspended policeman to his post “at the earliest”. Sources said the unofficial resolve has come in
the wake of simmering discontent prevailing among junior officers following Suryavanshi’s suspension.
Sources said junior rank officers, from PSIs to APIs (assistant police inspectors), who form the backbone of the 42,500-strong Mumbai police, are particularly peeved at the beating of the uniformed policeman within the Vidhan Bhavan premises by legislators.
As if the thrashing was not enough, the PSI was further penalised with suspension just for doing his job, sources said, quoting the mood in the force.
The incident was a sequel to the assault on policemen during the August 11 riots at Azad Maidan, which had a demoralising effect on policemen, worsened by the series of attacks on traffic policemen that followed, sources added.
The police top brass has now decided to revoke the suspension with a punishment, though of lesser quantum.
Sources said that while revoking Suryavanshi’s suspension, in all likelihood, he will be issued a reprimand letter for the way he behaved with an elected representative while in uniform. “He is likely to be given a warning to behave himself in the future,” a source added.
