The motormen have made this request to ensure that miscreants travelling on trains don’t create trouble.
“We have asked the authorities to place railway policemen on platforms where the motorman and guard are located,” said V Nair, general secretary, Motormen Union. The union has also spoken to the divisional railway manager (DRM) of CR to inquire into the attack on the motorman.
A bhajan mandali at Nahur attacked a CR motorman on Sunday around 4 pm. A member of the bhajan mandali hurled a stone at the motorman for objecting to loud singing and percussions, which made it difficult for the motorman to manoeuvre.
The group was in the compartment right behind the motorman’s cabin and as soon as the train left Kurla station, they began banging the walls and started singing very loudly.
Unable to concentrate on driving the train, the motorman got down at Nahur and requested the bhajan mandali to lower the volume. The group ignored his request and instead began abusing him. As soon as the motorman got into the compartment, one person from the group hurled a stone at him.
Even as the motorman started bleeding, the culprit from the group jumped on the tracks and fled. It was only at Mulund that the motorman could get any first aid.
The motorman then drove the train for another 30 minutes even though he was bleeding and he was rushed to a hospital at Dombivli, where he required six stitches.
