“A 10-year-old boy named Suresh [who lives in the area] saw Pandey with my daughter near the National Park before she went missing. But when Pandey was questioned, she told the police that he had taken Shreya for a walk and dropped her back at home,” Rai said.

Assistant commissioner of police Arvind Mahabadi said: “We had arrested Pandey, but he was released on bail.”

The police have not ruled out Pandey’s involvement, but police sources said Pandey has been absconding ever since he got bail.

“The case has not been solved despite police effort. So the logical explanation is that there are no leads,” said Ashish Chavan, Rai’s lawyer. “The court has said that the investigation has to continue until its logical conclusion, that is until the charge sheet is filed. Shreya’s family will pursue the case with the police.”
