Thackeray issued a statement condemning the police for beating up MNS legislator Harshvardhan Patil at Aurangabad.

“One cannot support the brutal beating up of a legislator by the police. We may have ideological differences with legislators of other parties but this is not justifiable,”Thackeray said.

The Aurangabad police have accused Patil of attacking policemen when he was prevented from plying a vehicle on a road that had been blocked during the visit of chief minister Prithviraj Chavan.

“The home minister should felicitate these brave policemen and send them to naxal areas,” Thackeray said.

He said the police had a right to take action against the legislator if he had done anything wrong.

Thackeray announced that a three-member committee of Sena legislators will inquire into the incident.

Thackeray’s surprising statement comes just two days after the ruling Nationalist Congress Party lured away Kiran Pawaskar, a Sena trade union leader.

He also announced that a grand rally of the opposition National Democratic Alliance will be held on January 16 at Bandra Kurla complex.

The rally is organised to protest against scams and soaring prices of essential commodities.
