A 25-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide after she was harassed for four months by her husband and in-laws for dowry. Her body was found on the railway tracks close to Malad station on Wednesday.
Her husband, Ajay Pandav, was arrested by the Dindoshi police on Thursday night from his Malad (East) residence.
Nayna Padav, police said, married Ajay in February this year. bsaid Vinayak Kakade, senior inspector, Dindoshi police station.
After she was found injured on the track, Nayna was rushed to Bhagwati hospital by railway police personnel and was declared dead on admission, police said.
They are awaiting the post mortem report to ascertain the cause of her death.
The police were informed about the incident by the victim’s brother, Pradeep Gondaliya, a 25-year-old businessman residing in Surat.
Ajay was booked under Sections 306 for abetment of suicide and 498A for subjecting his wife to cruelty, of the Indian Penal Code. Ajay was produced before a magistrate’s court on Friday afternoon and has been remanded to police custody until Wednesday.
A case has also been registered against Savita Pandav, the victim’s mother-in-law, Sanjay Pandav, the victim’s brother-in-law and Namrata Pandav, the victim’s sister-in-law.
“Savita used to live with the couple and allegedly tortured the victim. Her residence in Malad (East) is locked and we believe she has fled. We have received information that she is at a relative’s place and we will find her soon,” said Kakade.
Sanjay and Namrata live in Sion, and will be arrested by Saturday evening, the police said.
