The suspect, a man who disposed of unclaimed bodies for the hospital, also cremated the doctor's body after stripping it of its gold ornaments.

Police said Dr Vijaya Chaudhary, 48, had attended a wedding shortly before she went to the hospital to perform a post-mortem.

The suspect, Yuvraj Sable, 30, was also part of the operation.

He saw the doctor wearing gold jewellery and hatched a plot to kill her.

Shortly after the surgery, Sable asked her to come to the morgue, saying there was another post-mortem to be conducted. When the doctor arrived, Sable and another accomplice, Parmandas Bhagwani, fatally assaulted her with a brick.

After removing the gold ornaments that she was wearing, the two men put Dr Chaudhary's body in Bhagwani's ambulance and tried to dispose of it at a crematorium.
