Bodies of two minor girls were found hanging from a tree in a village under Mau police area of Chitrakoot on Wednesday night, police said.

According to their kin, the girls went out to attend nature’s call around noon and did not return, police said.

Their death could be the result of a suicide pact as both of them were friends, but investigation is still on to ascertain the exact reason. SP Chitrakoot Manoj Jha said the police are waiting for the post-mortem report. “The police are investigating the case and their family members have been questioned,” he added.

The girls, both residents of Kataiya Khadar village, were identified as Shiv Devi, 17 and Sarita Kumari, 16. Shiv Devi’s father Nankaua said they left for the fields around 12 pm on Wednesday. When they did not return till late evening, the family began searching for them. A group of boys who guard an orchard found their bodies hanging from the branch of a tree. The orchard is located around 500 metres from their homes.

The police questioned the family members and relatives but could not get any clue so far. Sarita’s father Girdhari said the family was in shock. “My daughter seemed fine when she left for the fields. I hope the police find out the truth,” he said.
