New BJP state unit president soon

The name of the new president of the Bihar BJP is likely to be announced at party’s national office-bearers’ meeting in New Delhi on April 8.

Top BJP sources said that the national core committee of the party would deliberate upon the issue on April 7 before formally announcing the name of the new president.
“Our president Nitin Gadkari has given the impression that the name of the new Bihar BJP chief would be announced next week,” said party’s vice-president Kiran Ghai Sinha on Sunday. The president, she said, was keen on early selection of the state party president in view of the elections in Bihar.
Sources said that the issue had also been discussed on Saturday but no name could be announced as there was no consensus. The names that came up for discussion were that of Ashwini Kumar Choubey, Mangal Pandey, Vinod Narayan Jha, Janardan Singh Sigriwal and Sukhda Pandey.
Sources, however, said that the main tussle was between Choubey and Pandey. “Choubeyji would have been elected much earlier, had his candidature not been opposed by a powerful leader of the party in the State,” they added.
Some senior BJP leaders said that the delay in the election of the president was sending a wrong message about the party to the people. “This indicates that party leaders are involved in some sort of power struggle among themselves, which is hindering the election of the president,” they said on condition of strict anonymity.
