A self-confessed Satyajit Ray fan, Ghosh's films mostly dealt with women and their psyche. He also explored same sex relationships with films like Chitrangada: The Crowning Wish (2012) and Memories in March. Chitrangada, his last released film, received Special Jury Award at the 60th National Film Awards. The film was loosely based on Rabindranath Tagore's work by the same name - Chitrangada.

The director received the Swarna Kamal (National Awards) for his film Abhoman in 2009.

In 2007, Ghosh brought to life his only English movie The Last Lear that starred Bollywood actors Amitabh Bachchan and Preity Zinta among others. It won the National Award for the best feature film in English.

With films like Dosar (2006), and Antarmahal (2005), Rituparno Ghosh got a taste of Cannes Film Festival. The black-and-white film won the National Film Award - Special Jury Award / Special Mention (Feature Film). Dosar was also selected for the 60th Cannes Film Festival in the Les Cinema Du Monde section. Konkona Sen Sharma received the Best Actress Award at the New York Film Festival in 2007. In Antarmahal, Rituparno Ghosh worked with Bollywood actors Abhishek Bachchan, Jackie Shroff and Soha Ali Khan.

The Bengali filmmaker has also directed Hindi movies, one of which was Raincoat (2004). Raincoat won another national award for the director. The movie was adjudged the best feature film in Hindi at the National Awards jury in 2004.

Come 2000 and the director bags yet another National Film Award for Best Direction for Utsab. Rituparno Ghosh made Chokher Bali in 2003 with Raima Sen and Aishwarya Rai. The film was based on a Rabindranath Tagore novel. Chokher Bali won National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Bengali.

After that he directed Dahan which released in 1997. Rituparna Sengupta won the Best Actress National Film Award for Dahan. He also received the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Bengali for Asukh (1999).

His second film Unishe April - starring Aparna Sen and Debashree Roy - won him his first of the 12 National Awards. It was honoured with the Best Feature Film at National Film Awards in 1995.

After pursuing a degree in economics, Rituparno began to work as a creative artist in an advertisement agency. He kick-started his film journey with a children's film Hirer Angti in 1992.
