France: Protests turn violent as Macron pushes pension plan

Published on Mar 22, 2023 05:41 PM IST

Over 200 people were arrested overnight on March 21 in Paris for setting fire to garbage in the streets and continued protests after France's parliament adopted a divisive bill raising the retirement age from 62 to 64. Meanwhile, oil shipments in the country were partially disrupted amid strikes at several refineries in western and southern France. President Emmanuel Macron will look to "calm things down" with a televised interview amid growing anger across France over his plans to raise the retirement age, a source close to the centrist president said, reported Reuters.
