- A total of 21 foreigners and their two Kashmiri guides were caught in a massive avalanche and buried under the snow as they were skiing high in the mountains near the tourist town of Gulmarg, according to a police statement.

Two Polish skiers were killed and 19 other foreign tourists had to be rescued after a massive avalanche hit the upper reaches of Jammu and Kashmir's ski resort Gulmarg on Wednesday. In view of the recent snowfall in the Valley, authorities in Jammu and Kashmir issued a medium danger avalanche warning in four districts - Baramulla, Ganderbal, Kupwara, and Bandipora. Skiing resumed in the popular skiing destination a day after the incident, on Thursday with fresh standard operating procedures. (ANI)

According to reports, the Hapatkhud Kangdori area where the accident took place had been declared off-limits due to the possibility of an avalanche following heavy snowfall two days ago. (ANI)

"Three teams of 21 foreign nationals and two local guides went to Affarwat for skiing this morning. A snow avalanche struck Hapatkhud Kangdori around 12.30 pm," Baramulla Senior Superintendent of Police Amod Nagpure was quoted by saying news agency PTI. (ANI)
