In a photo from February 2008, a young Prince Harry is pictured in the desert in Helmand province, Afghanistan. British social attitudes have transformed in recent decades but the monarchy has been bound by a more traditional values. The queen’s approval of the marriage is a stark demonstration of how the monarchy has also changed in the last 80 years when the idea of a royal marrying someone who was divorced was inconceivable. Tourists take pictures outside Buckingham Palace after Prince Harry announced his engagement to Meghan Markle in London, Britain. It wouldn’t be first time that a British royal has married an American. In 1936, Edward VIII famously abdicated after he was forced to choose between the monarchy and his relationship with twice-divorced American socialite Wallis Simpson. It was dubbed “the greatest love story of the 20th century.” (Darrin Zammit / REUTERS) expand-icon View Photos in a new improved layout
