Photos: The spellbinding murmurations of migratory starlings
As winter becomes harsher, starlings migrate from Europe to other regions. Moving around in big groups, they form different shapes called murmurations. This remarkable quality in forming these swiftly-changing shapes is a mesmerising sight for onlookers. The shapes that starlings produce are arbitrary in form, but the coordination between the birds makes for an awe-inspiring visual treat. Here’s a look at these murmurations as the birds swirl through the skies of Rahat in southern Israel.

The starlings produce a range of shapes in quick succession and maintain cohesion in their flock during murmurations. The visual show this movement puts on is to a startling effect, the resulting shapes spanning the instantly familiar to outright abstract. (Ronen Zvulun / REUTERS)
