Indian cricketer Harmanpreet Kaur Bhullar got a heroes’ welcome at her hometown Moga from local administrators and politicians after the 28-year-old arrived here on Sunday. The middle-order batswoman grabbed headlines in the recently held Women’s World Cup in England, thanks to her superlative 171-run knock against Australia in the semifinal, which propelled India into the final.
Although, the Mithali Raj-led Indian team lost to England in the final, the team caught attention of the country due to their fighting spirit. Harmanpreet, who was vice-captain of the team, hit 51 in the final but could not steer India to the title win as they fell 9 runs short of the target.
Harmanpreet touched down at the Amritsar airport at noon on Sunday where her family members and friends had come to receive her. A road show took place from Landeke village to Moga city where Harman was perched on a jeep, flanked by her father Harmander Singh Bhullar and others.
Moga MLA Harjot Kamal, Baghapurana MLA Darshan Singh Brar and Deputy Commissioner Dilraj Singh also gave a rousing welcome to the cricketer. The road show started from Landeke, and ended at her village Duneke late evening.
Harmanpreet led India to win in the Asia Cup 2016 and also played a fine innings in the World Cup qualifiers’ final earlier this year, but never received such welcome back home. She is touted to be the next India Women’s captain.
