Two groups created a ruckus on Saturday in Sunam, 15 kilometres from here, in their dispute over the construction of a wall around the ancient Sitasar Mandir.
One of the groups also staged a protest outside the office of the deputy superintendent of police to seek resolution of the issue. Haridev Goyal, member of the temple committee, attributed the tension to the interference of the rival group in the work of raising a wall that had collapsed a few days ago during heavy rain. "Two days ago, the police stalled construction and assured both groups of solution to the issue but no answer has emerged yet," he added.
Goyal charged the administration with taking a sensitive issue lightly and said their would be either a decision on the issue or a massive protest in the coming days. Rajinder Singh Kaifi of the rival group said the wall project was illegal, for the land is shared with a gurudwara. “We will not allow any construction on it without consensus,” he added.
Subdivisional magistrate Gurtej Singh visited the spot to study the situation. The group ended their commotion after he agreed to look into the matter. The police deployed heavy security around the temple to pre-empt any trouble.
