An engineering student was burnt to death after being allegedly raped in a suburban area of Ranchi, police said on Friday.
The semi-naked half-charred body of the 19-year-old victim, a third semester student of Ram Tahal Chowdhary Institute of Technology, Ormajhi was found in the morning inside her house at Booty. She was alone at home.
Ironically, the incident occurred on the day the country is mourning the gang rape and brutal murder of Nirbhaya, a para-medical student, in Delhi on the same day four years ago.
“We registered an FIR under section 302 (murder), 376 (punishment for rape) and other relevant sections of the IPC,” said Sadar deputy superintendent of police Vikash Chandra Srivastava.
The incident came to light after the girl’s sister failing to reach her on phone around 8.15am, sent some neighbours to check on her. On reaching the house, they found the door was ajar and smoke was emanating from the room.
When they entered the room they found her body lying near the bed with her face fully burnt. Other materials in the room were also gutted.
The miscreant(s) raped her or made an attempt to rape her before setting her on fire, said the DSP.
Victim’s father told the police that he had dropped his daughter at her college on Thursday and went to his official residence at CMPDI colony in Barkakana in Ramgarh district, where other members of his family are presently staying.
She returned to her house in Booty in the evening and called her parents urging them to get her mobile phone recharged.
She also told them of her plan of visiting Barkakana on Saturday for the weekend.
“I suspect that some students who live in a lodge at the back of my house at Booty were involved in the crime. When they could not succeed in raping her, they burnt her to death. My daughter was a very simple girl,” the devastated father said.
After the news of the horrific incident broke out, hundreds of students of the institute gathered in front of the victim’s house and demanded stern action against the culprits.
The body was sent for a post mortem, said the Sadar DSP.
