Purists might object to me equating my college staffroom with ‘home sweet home’. But it does weave a certain magic spell on me. Often, I take refuge there when I’m stressed, depressed or simply unwell.
‘Unity in diversity’ is the mantra of our staffroom. We speak different languages and follow different customs. We enjoy potluck parties and we relish dishes from various communities. We then experiment with different recipes.
We play antakshari, indulge in idle chat and debate over national issues. At times, we have heated arguments but they are sorted out quickly. There are astrologers amongst us whose predictions are entertaining.
Now you must be wondering when we actually teach our students. Of course, we conduct regular lectures and class tests, mark examination papers and even help the students to conduct various extra-curricular activities.
It’s sad when someone retires. Then we welcome newcomers. Soon, they are a part of our staffroom and activities.
