A tragic shooting in Muncie, Indiana, has claimed the life of a 17-year-old football prospect.

Who was Christopher Wilson Jr.?
Christopher Wilson Jr., a senior at Yorktown High School, was fatally shot in the early hours of Monday, October 5, according to USA Today.
A standout defensive end at Yorktown High School, Wilson was considered the top-rated football recruit in East Central Indiana. In June, he announced his commitment to West Virginia, selecting the Mountaineers over Auburn, Cincinnati and Purdue to continue his college football career.
The highly regarded prospect had made five appearances for the Tigers this season, recording 12 tackles, including two for loss, along with one sack and four quarterback hurries.
Muncie police launch investigation
According to a report first published by the Muncie Star Press, Muncie police discovered Wilson's body inside a vehicle in the 1400 block of East Cromer Avenue on Monday.
Melissa Criswell, deputy chief of the Muncie Police Department, said Delaware County emergency dispatchers received a report of a shooting at 2:59 am. Wilson had suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Muncie police.

The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing. Authorities are asking anyone who may have information about the incident to contact 911 or the Muncie Police Department at 765-747-4867.
Yorktown High School mourns Wilson
The news of Wilson's death was shared with Yorktown High School families and students on Monday. Principal Stacey Brewer addressed the tragedy in a message to the school community.
"With great sadness, I share that Chris Wilson, a senior at Yorktown High School, died tragically early this morning," she wrote.
Brewer described Wilson as "a valued member of our school, our football team, and our community."
"Our hearts are with his family, friends and teammates," she added.
Yorktown head football coach Mike Wilhelm also paid tribute to the teenager, remembering him not only for his ability on the field but also for the way he treated those around him. "He's a great football player, but an even better friend and teammate."

"He was highly respected because he treated others with love and kindness. Uncommonly, he never sought out the attention that came with being a high Division-1 football recruit. "He showed up every day and worked hard to get better. Our team has lost a brother, and we will carry him with us forever,” the head coach added.
