200 parrots rescued

Two hundred parrots kept in cages for sale by peddlers were rescued in Mumbai by the activists of Karuna, a voluntary organisation, with the help of police. India had banned illegal bird trade, but with lax laws and mild punishment, poaching and smuggling of rare species remain unchecked. Displaying of birds, especially parrots in cages is illegal and punishable by a fine and imprisonment of up to five years.
