The Centre of Indian Trade Unions, CITU, which represents workers in Coal India Limited, has voiced strong opposition to the planned disinvestments in the company. Jiban Roy, secretary of the CPI (M) led trade union stated the concerns in a press conference on Thursday, claiming that privatization would result in the deterioration of the conditions of the employees. Roy also talked about the vital role played by the coal industry in the Indian economy, and how disinvestments would mean upsetting a resourceful national entity and letting it to go to the hands of private exploiters. He also claimed that the lives of thousands of workers would be at stake if the nationalized coal mining operations were to be reverted back to the private sector.
