In 1975, the then president Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed announced the emergency across the nation. Emergency was declared on recommendation of Indira Gandhi-led Congress govt at Centre. The Emergency remained in effect from June 25, 1975 to March 21, 1977. Taking to Twitter, the prime minister pledged to strengthen India's democratic spirit. Highlighting the 'dark days' of systemic repression during the Emergency, PM Modi linked a series of infographics posted from BJP's official Instagram handle. The Emergency is often regarded as a dark phase in independent India's history. There were reports of human rights violations, press being censored to a repressive extent.
