President Donald Trump has defended the ongoing U.S. war with Iran while making a startling reference to Los Angeles and San Diego during a campaign rally in Nebraska. Trump said the economic costs of the conflict were a “small price to pay” and suggested that Iran could “take out” the two California cities. His remarks triggered immediate backlash from California leaders, including Governor Gavin Newsom and the mayors of Los Angeles and San Diego. Trump has repeatedly argued that the war was necessary to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. The comments have intensified debate over the conflict, its costs and Trump’s justification.
