'World hedging beyond U.S. And China': Jaishankar warns of fragmented, less rule-bound order

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, accepting an honorary PhD from IIM Calcutta, outlines how India’s foreign policy and economic strategy are tightly interlinked, arguing that “comprehensive national power” now depends on manufacturing strength, advanced technology, resilient supply chains, and a digitally empowered society. He describes a world where politics increasingly trumps pure economics, great‑power rivalry reshapes trade and connectivity, and India responds with Make in India, infrastructure upgrades, digital public infrastructure, skills and talent mobility agreements, and a more proactive, Atmanirbhar‑driven diplomacy geared to achieving Viksit Bharat by 2047.
