Hamas’s armed wing has formally confirmed that its longtime masked spokesman Abu Obaida was killed in an Israeli strike and has introduced a new spokesperson who might continue to use the powerful brand name “Abu Obaida” in his place. The Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades say the original Abu Obaida’s real identity was Huthaifa Samir al-Kahlout, hailing him as a “great leader” and architect of their media machine after nearly two decades as the face and voice of Hamas’s propaganda war against Israel.
