Watch: Pakistan’s vanishing Ramzan drummers

Jun 03, 2018 20:39 IST
about the video

Once an integral part of Ramzan tradition, the drummers who go around waking up people for their morning meal before fasting begins, are a vanishing breed in Pakistan today. Rattling out syncopated beats from a dhol drum, 66-year-old Lal Hussain has been sauntering through the streets of Pakistan’s Rawalpindi during the holy month for the last 35 years. But as more Pakistanis connect to the grid and purchase smartphones or rely on digital clocks to rouse them for Sehri, the future of Hussain and others like him is becoming uncertain. How is Lal Hussain coping with the change? What do the people think about this fading tradition? Watch the video to find out.
