Mohamed Nasheed, a former political prisoner who defeated Asia's longest serving ruler in the first multiparty election in the Maldives, assumed as president of the Indian Ocean nation. 41 year old Nasheed was sworn in as the country's new president at a glittering ceremony in Maldivian capital Male on Tuesday. Dignitaries from various countries, who included neighbouring India's Vice President Hamid Ansari, were present at the ceremony.
