A Sikh man was stabbed to death at a deli he ran in the US state of New Jersey on Thursday — the third attack on a member of the community in three weeks.

Tarlok Singh, the victim, was found dead by a relative at the Park Deli in East Orange city. Local authorities have called it homicide but have not determined whether it was a hate crime. The motive remains unclear.

Singh’s wife and children live in India, ABC7NY, a local news channel, said.

Simran Jeet Singh, a scholar at New York University’s Center for Religion and Media, tweeted: “This is the third attack on a Sikh in the last three weeks. So tired of all this sadness.”

Thursday’s incident followed an attack on Sahib Singh Natt, 71, in California earlier this month. The septuagenarian was assaulted by two young men, one of whom turned out to be the estranged son of the local police chief. He had been thrown to ground and kicked repeatedly as caught on a home surveillance video.

Also in California in July, Surjit Malhi was attacked while putting up campaign posters. “They threw sand in my eyes and then they started hitting me after that,” Malhi told a local affiliate of ABC News. “They were cussing at me saying, ‘Go back to your country, you don’t belong here’.”
