Poland-Russia conflict highlights: Poland scrambled its air defences to shoot down Russia drones that violated its airspace, a first for a NATO country during the ongoing Ukraine war. “We are ready to hold consultations with the Polish Ministry of Defense on this issue,” the statement by Russia's defence ministry said.
Warsaw’s Chopin Airport has now reopened following a temporary closure, after Ukraine warned early Wednesday that Russian drones had crossed into Polish airspace and were heading toward the city of Zamosc.
The Polish armed forces confirmed that fighter jets and defence systems had been activated to protect national airspace after Russia launched attacks on Ukraine’s western regions near the Polish border.
“Polish and allied aircraft are operating in our airspace, while ground-based air defence and radar reconnaissance systems have been brought to the highest state of readiness,” the operational command said on X.
According to Reuters, it could not independently verify the reports of drones, and Warsaw has not officially confirmed the drone intrusion.
Airports shut down
Four airports in Poland, including Warsaw’s Chopin Airport, were closed Tuesday night due to “unplanned military activity related to ensuring state security,” according to notices posted by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
The other affected airports are Rzeszów–Jasionka, Warsaw Modlin, and Lublin.
Concerns of wider Russia invasion
Just a day earlier, Polish President Karol Nawrocki had warned that Russia could attempt further invasions, saying, “We do not trust Vladimir Putin’s good intentions.” The comments were made at a press conference in Helsinki with Finnish President Alexander Stubb, according to AFP.
“While waiting, of course, for a long-term peace, permanent peace, which is necessary to our regions, we believe that Vladimir Putin is ready to also invade other countries,” Nawrocki added. “That is exactly why we are developing our armed forces, we are developing our partnership and our allied relations.”
Meanwhile, the Finnish President said he had been in regular contact with US President Donald Trump as European leaders pressed for a stronger stance against Moscow.
Both Poland and Finland, NATO members bordering Russia, have raised concerns since Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz voiced similar fears on Monday, warning that Putin’s “imperialist plan wouldn’t end with the conquest of Ukraine.”
Last week, Trump hosted Nawrocki at the White House and pledged additional American troops to Poland.
Poland on alert after reports of Russian drones: Latest development
1. Ukraine’s air force announced on Telegram that Russian drones had entered Polish airspace, flying westward toward the city of Zamosc. This marked the first such alert involving a direct drone threat to Poland in weeks.
2. The Polish military said both national and allied aircraft were airborne to protect its skies. Ground-based air defence and radar systems were also placed on the “highest state of readiness” to track and respond to the potential drone incursion.
3. Airports closed for security reasons: Four airports — Warsaw Chopin, Rzeszów–Jasionka, Warsaw Modlin, and Lublin — were shut down on Tuesday night. Notices published by the US federal aviation administration described the closures as linked to “unplanned military activity related to ensuring state security.”
4. President Karol Nawrocki said Moscow could be preparing to extend aggression beyond Ukraine. He stressed that Warsaw does not trust President Vladimir Putin’s intentions.

Poland-Russia conflict: On Wednesday, US Representative Joe Wilson alleged that Russia had used Iranian-made Shahed drones to attack Poland, a NATO member.
“Russia is attacking NATO ally Poland with Iranian Shahed drones less than a week after President Trump hosted President Nawrocki at the White House. This is an act of war,” Wilson wrote on X.
He urged President Trump to respond firmly: “I urge President Trump to respond with mandatory sanctions that will bankrupt the Russian war machine and arm Ukraine with weapons capable of striking Russia.”
Wilson added that Moscow was testing NATO directly: “Putin is no longer content just losing in Ukraine while bombing mothers and babies, he is now directly testing our resolve in NATO territory. Putin stated that ‘Russia knows no borders.’ Free and prosperous nations will teach Russia about borders.”
