American chess grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky, who died at 29, had methamphetamine and kratom in his system, reveals toxicology report.
American chess grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky had several drugs present in his system at the time of his death last year, as per a toxicology report.

Naroditsky was discovered deceased in October 2025 at his residence in Charlotte, North Carolina. He was 29 years old. Authorities launched an investigation into his death, considering the possibility of a drug overdose or suicide.
At the time of his passing, Naroditsky had methamphetamine, amphetamine, 7-hydroxymitragynine, and mitragynine in his system, according to a toxicology report that was shared with NBC News by the North Carolina Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

All on drugs
Methamphetamine and amphetamine are synthetic stimulants, whereas 7-hydroxymitragynine and mitragynine are the primary psychoactive components present in kratom, a supplement that may serve as a stimulant.
Kratom is a plant indigenous to Southeast Asia that, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration, “can lead to psychotic symptoms, as well as psychological and physiological dependence.” The DEA also states that methamphetamines and amphetamines can result in organ damage and even fatalities. All substances detected in Naroditsky's system have the potential for addiction.
Daniel Naroditsky's death
Naroditsky, a child prodigy who emerged as one of the most significant American figures in the sport, was found unconscious on a sofa by his friends, grandmaster Oleksandr Bortnyk and Peter Giannatos, the founder of the Charlotte Chess Center.
Bortnyk mentioned that he had come to check on his friend after Naroditsky failed to respond to his calls and messages. He also noted that Naroditsky was distressed over a matter involving Vladimir Kramnik, a former world chess champion whom he once admired, who had accused him of cheating.
Vladimir Kramnik reacts to toxicology report
On Tuesday, Kramnik issued a new statement in response to the media's release of the toxicology report. The Russian Grandmaster conveyed his sorrow regarding Naroditsky’s premature passing, while also noting that the event was “exploited” by specific individuals to further their own agendas.
“I deeply regret that this profound tragedy was exploited by various individuals and groups to advance their own agendas,” he stated. “There can be no justification for such immoral conduct.”
