The sudden and tragic death of Coral Springs Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen who was found dead inside her home after police responded to a welfare check on Wednesday morning has left an entire community in mourning. Her husband, Stephen Bowen has been arrested and charged with her murder. Here is what we know about him so far.

Arrested and facing serious charges

Stephen Bowen who is 40 has been arrested and booked into the Broward County Main Jail. According to records, he is facing charges of premeditated murder and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence. The second charge suggests investigators believe there may have been an attempt to interfere with or alter evidence connected to the case. As of Thursday morning, he remained in custody without bond.

Taken into custody after police search

Police found Nancy Metayer Bowen dead at her home during a welfare check around 10am on Wednesday. Later, law enforcement tracked Stephen Bowen to an apartment complex in Plantation where he was taken into custody. According to Local10, witnesses described a heavy police presence. “We just heard a big bang and I said, ‘Oh my God, is that gunshots?’” one witness said. “We looked out the window and we see SWAT cars, cop cars, just everything everywhere, guns drawn."

Case being treated as domestic violence

According to ABC News, authorities said the case is being investigated as a “domestic violence incident.” Police Chief Brad Mock confirmed officers discovered the vice mayor dead inside her home after being called to check on her well-being. Officials have not yet released further details about the cause of death.

His wife was a prominent community leader

Nancy Metayer Bowen was 38 and was first elected in 2020 and became the first Black and Haitian American woman to serve as a Coral Springs commissioner. She was re-elected in 2024 and later appointed vice mayor. Before politics, she worked as an environmental scientist and helped respond to major hurricanes.

Her family mourn her loss

Her family shared an emotional message on social media. “While many knew her as a leader and advocate, we knew her as a sister, a daughter, and a friend whose warmth and laughter filled every room.”

They added, “Her legacy will live on not only in the policies she helped to shape, but in the countless lives she touched.”
