Actor Salman Khan has offered a theory as to why his film Tubelight underperformed at the box office. Salman didn’t mention the poor reviews, but said that the film’s Eid release could have hurt it. Tubelight has a ‘rotten’ 15% rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, based on 13 reviews.

When asked if Salman has developed an instinct as a producer, he told Pinkvilla, “Like for Tubelight, I did say that (this is Eid), people are going there to you know, (want to have fun), and they are going to have a great time, (it’s a celebratory film, and we know that the script does not warrant an Eid release). So they were like ‘no no, we have got the date, how can we miss Eid’. I said ‘that doesn’t mean this film should be released on Eid, let’s think of another date’.”

He continued, “But at that time I should have put my foot down because (people went in expecting a celebration, but came out crying)”. Salman’s association with the Eid release date goes back a long way. The streak began with Wanted in 2009 and has delivered big box office hits such as Bodyguard, Dagangg, Ek Tha Tiger, Kick, Sultan and Bajrangi Bhaijaan. The only films to have underperformed are Tubelight and the recent Race 3.

Salman will relinquish the Eid slot to Akshay Kumar in 2020, when the Kesari star releases Rohit Shetty’s Sooryavanshi. This Eid, however, Salman will next appear in Ali Abbas Zafar’s Bharat, in which he will reunite with Katrina Kaif. It was recently announced that Salman will star in director Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat follow-up, titled Inshallah. The film will also feature Alia Bhatt.
