Now that it has been confirmed that the character Kamli in Sanjay Dutt biopic Sanju has been based on a man named Paresh Ghelani, the real man has been talking about his long friendship with Dutt. Ghelani told Bollywood Hungama that Dutt has had several friends who have stuck with him through thick and thin over the years, many of whom were not mentioned in the film. Ghelani said that scenes have been changed for dramatic impact, but ‘Raju (director Rajkumar Hirani) has stuck to the truth.’

Kamli is played by Vicky Kaushal in the film, while Ranbir Kapoor plays Sanjay Dutt.

The film has been criticised for whitewashing certain aspects of Dutt’s life, particularly his womanising and various brushes with the law. “I was never concerned if he’s saying the truth or not,” Ghelani said, “(to me) he has always been truthful.”

About the whitewashing, Ghelani said that Sanju “is an honest film and is a courageous film. He has said that he made mistakes and he paid for it. He suffered through drug addiction problems and he’s come out of it, and there’s a lot to be learned from this. Sanju has always been honest.”

Ghelani, who lives in the US but is originally from Gujarat, revealed himself as Kamli in a social media post shortly after the film’s release. “Sanju is an ode to falling, rising, making mistakes and learning, flaws, imperfection – everything that defines the core of friendship. It is more importantly a relentless pursuit of life with all its shades. I know I share this sentiment with all friends and family close to him,” he wrote.

Dutt took to Twitter to thank Paresh for being his ‘pillar of strength’. The 59-year-old actor wrote, “@pareshghelani you are the pillar of my strength. Thank you for being there, then and now. Welcome to the world of social media buddy! Love you lots.”

Sanju has made over Rs 500 crore worldwide, and is among the top 5 highest grossing Hindi films of all time.
