NHAI has partnered with Reliance Jio to launch a mobile-based safety alert system that will warn highway users of accident-prone stretches via SMS and calls.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has partnered with Reliance Jio to introduce a new mobile-based safety alert system aimed at improving travel safety on India’s National Highway network. Under a newly signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the system will use Jio’s 4G and 5G telecom network to send advance warnings to travellers as they approach risky or hazardous road sections.

Highway users will receive alerts on their phones about accident-prone stretches, stray-cattle zones, fog-affected areas, emergency diversions and other danger spots. These notifications will be sent through SMS, WhatsApp, and even high-priority calls, ensuring that drivers are informed well before they reach such locations and can slow down or drive more cautiously.

How the System Will Work

The goal of this initiative is to provide drivers with timely information. Instead of relying on new roadside warning boards or equipment, the system will operate through Jio’s existing telecom infrastructure. By using current mobile towers, the alerts can be rolled out quickly without the need to install additional hardware along highways.

The safety alert system will also be gradually linked with NHAI’s digital services, including the ‘Rajmargyatra’ mobile app and the national highway emergency helpline number 1033. Once connected, travellers will be able to access safety updates and emergency assistance through a more coordinated digital network.

Pilots, Expansion and Compliance

The automated system will work for all Jio users travelling on or near National Highways. Alerts will reach drivers before they enter identified danger zones, giving them enough time to adjust speed and remain alert. The first phase of the programme will see pilot projects launched under a few regional NHAI offices.

These trials will help identify risk zones more accurately and fine-tune alert levels before the system is expanded to other parts of the country. Officials confirmed that the initiative will follow existing regulations and data-protection requirements. NHAI has said it plans to work with other telecom service providers as well to expand the coverage of the safety alerts across networks.
