While the teachers were all smiles during the general body meeting of the Panjab University Teachers Association (PUTA) called on Thursday following the announcement of the release of pending arrears, other issues, including the pending Career Advancement Scheme (CAS) promotions and PhD increments, were in focus.

PUTA president AS Naura informed that nearly 360 promotions under CAS have taken place in the past two years. While auditors hired by the varsity to vet these promotions had earlier posed problems, PUTA said it has been getting these cases cleared on priority.

PUTA stressed that it is working on pending increments for teachers who completed their PhD between January 1, 2016, and January 1, 2023. PUTA added that the announcement of a Unified Pension Scheme is also favourable as compared to the National Pension Scheme.

While some teachers also appreciated the move to rename Arts Block-3 after former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, it was pointed out that it is rare that Arts Block-1 and Arts Block-2, which have been named after Udham Singh and Bhagat Singh, respectively, are referred to as such. The authorities must use the departments’ full name for official work as well, they said.
