The fire broke out on the second floor of the building, which had been closed for months, and was contained before it could spread to other parts of the building. Six shops were situated on the ground floor of the building, which remained safe. It is suspected that the fire broke out at around 7am, but an alarm was raised at around 9:40am, when a shopkeeper arrived at his shop on the ground floor.
It is also suspected that a short-circuit may have caused the blaze. The owner of Pal Money Exchangers on the ground floor of the building, Subhash, said,” I saw flames emanating from the second floor of the building when I came to open my shop. I immediately rushed to the fire brigade office on Gill Road. The fire fighters were able to restricted the flames to the second floor, else the six shops on the ground floor may also have been gutted. Earlier, the office of a firm was situated on the second floor, but it was closed a few months ago. Furniture was gutted, and the building also sustained damage.”
Leading fireman Vijay said,”Two fire tenders were rushed to the spot and the firefighting operation continued for around an hour. The reason behind the incident is yet to be determined. No casualty was reported.”
