The siblings, aged 14 and nine, residents of Jethi Nagar of Khanna were headed towards Beeja village and were near the FCI Godown when the mishap took place. Their mother, Kamajit Kaur, who was driving the two-wheeler suffered minor injuries as she fell on the footpath, while her sons fell on the road. Her nine-year-old son died on the spot, while her elder son, a Class 9 student, succumbed while being transferred to a private hospital.
The truck driver tried to escape but was caught by the onlookers, and handed over to the police. Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Jagdev Singh said a case under Sections 279 (reckless driving) and 304A (causing death due to negligence) of the Indian Penal Code has been lodged against the accused, and his truck has been impounded.
The victims’ father, Satinder Bhangu, sells veterinary medicines. The family used to go to the congregation every Sunday. Initially, the complainant only intended to take her younger son, a Class 4 student, with her, but after her elder son insisted on accompanying them, she agreed to take him as well.
