Tripura student dies after attack in Dehradun, assailants ‘used racial slurs’

Senior sub-inspector Jitendra Kumar of Selaqui police station said five people were arrested for the attack but the prime suspect was still on the run

DEHRADUN: A post-graduate student from Tripura died of stab injuries on Friday, more than two weeks after he was allegedly attacked by a group of people in the Selaqui area of Dehradun, police said.

The victim, identified as Angel Chakma, (24) was a student at a private university in Dehradun. He had been admitted to a hospital after sustaining serious stab wounds during an altercation on December 9 and succumbed to his injuries during treatment on Friday.

Senior sub-inspector Jitendra Kumar of Selaqui police station said the incident took place near a liquor outlet following an argument.

“According to the victim’s brother’s complaint, Michael Chakma, who was present at the time and was also injured, the attackers were allegedly in an inebriated condition and used racial slurs for them. Both brothers had also consumed alcohol when the incident occurred”, he said.

Kumar said a case had already been registered in connection with the attack and a special team has been constituted to arrest the prime suspect, who is from Nepal and lives in Haridwar.

“Five accused -- Avinash Negi, Shaurya Rajput, Suraj Khwas, Ayush Badoni and Sumit -- were arrested on December 14,” Kumar said.
