Delhi CM Kejriwal hits out at BJP after ‘attack’ on Satyendar Jain’s convoy

Hours after state water minister Satyendar Jain’s convoy was attacked in Matiala on Sunday, chief minister Arvind Kejriwal accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of orchestrating the attack -- a claim the party rejected.

“This is BJP. The party of louts. They expose themselves when they are losing (elections). The people will teach them a lesson,” Kejriwal said in a tweet in Hindi on Sunday evening.

A senior police officer said they have not received a complaint in the matter.

A video of the incident, posted on Twitter by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), showed a group of men, carrying black flags, climbing on the bonnet of the minister’s SUV and banging it with their hands, thereby blocking the car from moving ahead. “BJP goons attack Delhi minister Satyendra Jain convoy! BJP is losing MCD elections, hence they are down to what they know best - VIOLENCE!” said AAP in the post.

A senior police official said that police personnel who were a part of the security arrangements for the event cleared the protesters. “Government officials have not lodged a formal complaint yet,” said the officer.

According to officials, Jain was visiting Matiala to lay the foundation stone for a sewer network in the area.

Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor said locals from Chhawla, who were protesting against the new excise policy, were behind the attack. “It is sad that AAP, which was born out of an agitational movement, cannot tolerate a protest by people today. It is sad that CM brands them as goons,” he said.
