Prayagraj to get centre of excellence for kayaking, canoeing, rowing
The project is inspired by the world-class water sports boat house and warehouse developed by the Sports Authority of India in Kerala.
The Prayagraj administration is developing a modern water sports training hub at the Boat Club complex, equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure to establish the Sangam city as a centre of excellence for kayaking, canoeing and rowing while preparing athletes for national and international competitions.

The project, inspired by the world-class water sports boat house and warehouse developed by the Sports Authority of India in Kerala, is being implemented in phases following decisions taken by the divisional sports development and promotion committee headed by divisional commissioner Saumya Agarwal.
The upcoming facilities include a modern warehouse for safe storage of boats, a multipurpose gym to enhance athletes’ strength and endurance, scientific maintenance systems for sports equipment and dedicated training infrastructure tailored for water sports.
Divisional commissioner Saumya Agarwal reviewed the ongoing works during an inspection of the Boat Club complex on Tuesday along with district magistrate Manish Kumar Verma, Prayagraj Development Authority vice-chairman Rishiraj and other officials.
She directed officials to ensure quality construction and timely completion.
Agarwal said the recent performance of Prayagraj athletes at the 37th Uttar Pradesh State Senior Canoe Sprint Championship, where they won several medals in kayaking and canoeing events, reflected the region’s growing talent and potential in water sports. She said expanding modern sports infrastructure and introducing scientific training facilities were essential to sustain and nurture this talent.
She also directed officials to prioritise the plan to develop the Boat Club into a Centre of Excellence for water sports training and competitions. Stressing optimum utilisation of available resources, Agarwal said the objective was to provide athletes with a safe, modern and competitive training ecosystem while establishing Prayagraj as a leading venue for hosting national and international water sports events.
