The drop in the temperature was reported due to a reduction in moisture level and clear skies, said officials

The city witnessed a significant drop in minimum temperature from above 20 degrees Celsius two days ago to 18 degrees Celsius on Monday. The temperature will further drop by 1-2 degrees Celsius in the coming days, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Since the beginning of October, the city has recorded minimum or night temperatures between 20 and 22 degrees Celsius. In areas like Lohegaon and Hadapsar, the temperature was even recorded as 23 or 24 degrees Celsius. (REPRESENTATIVE PHOTO)

The drop in the temperature was reported due to a reduction in moisture level and clear skies, said officials.

Since the beginning of October, the city has recorded minimum or night temperatures between 20 and 22 degrees Celsius. In areas like Lohegaon and Hadapsar, the temperature was even recorded as 23 or 24 degrees Celsius.

On October 22, Shivajinagar area recorded a minimum temperature of 22 degrees Celsius. It fell by 4 degrees Celsius on October 23 and the minimum temperature was recorded as 18.2 degrees Celsius. It was considered a significant drop in October’s temperature this year.

Anupam Kashyapi, head, weather and forecasting division, IMD, Pune, said, “The cloud cover that has existed over the city for a long is no more there and the city is experiencing clear skies. Also, the moisture in the atmosphere has reduced rapidly. It helps in the escape of longwave radiation from soil during nighttime. This results in a fall in minimum temperature.” The temperature is expected to reduce slightly in the next 2-3 days, he added.

Vineet Kumar, former scientist from the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology ( IITM), in a tweet, said, “This year in October for the first time the temperature was recorded below 19 degrees Celsius. Last year, on the same day, Pune city recorded 15.8 Celsius. In the next two days, another 1-2 degrees fall in minimum temperature is expected. However, there no major drop is expected in minimum temperature in the next eight days.”

Although there is a reduction in temperature, it cannot be considered the beginning of the winter season, according to experts.

It is expected that the cooler northern winds significant for the winters in Maharashtra are expected to arrive from the first week of November. After that, a significant drop can be experienced in both minimum and maximum temperatures. However, it is still early to say exactly how the winter situation unfold, said IMD official.
